  1. While attending Arizona State University back in the late 60’s, I used to drive up to Purgatory to go skiing whenever I could scrape together a few dollars. The lift ticket in those days cost $ 6.50 per day. I see where I’m now old enough to qualify for free skiing. Maybe I should travel from my home in Australia back there just for old times sake.

My freshman year at CU day tickets were $3.75 at Arapahoe Basin. The next season, ’63-’64, they went up to $4. We all were bitching about that!

    • Ginny Gelbach says:

I remember $6.00 tickets at Arapahoe…and you had to buy them ahead of your ski day.Not many areas were open then so A Basin was one of a few closer ski areas.

  3. Now that I’m 77 there are no longer free deals for skiers over 50!! Every year I got closer to free skiing the age limits jumped up another 10 years!!
    Ah the old days! LOL!

    • Ah, but Taos Ski Valley, NM I believe is still free for 80+. It used to be 70, then 75. I was able to ski free for a couple years when it was 70, then paid until I was 75. Now, at 90, I ski so little it needs to be free to make sense for me.

Loveland has a super deal for over 70 seniors. The season pass is $199.00 if purchased before December and at end of season. Plus it includes 3 days at many other areas. Monarch’s Season pass for over 70 is probably the best deal anywhere as you have stated and if I remember a day pass is free with ID to prove you are over 70 I just love being carded there! Eldora just gives a $20.00 discount off the Season Pass for seniors and active military What a shame they are missing out on a great segment of business.

  5. Gregory James says:

I arrived in Boulder in the fall of 1973 with a brand new pair of Roc 550s, ostensibly to matriculate at CU but really to ski. Vail was our destination of choice, but was pretty expensive at $25 for a daily ticket, but in 1975 Mary Jane opened at Winter Park. It was owned and operated by the city of Denver and lift tickets were only $9, so it quickly became a regular in the rotation for the next couple of years. I still have some old Kodak photos I took on Gandy Dancer.

  6. Frederick J Streichenwein says:

    good morning

how come vail does not have a 70 plus lift tickets for us old people that are young at heart and still skiing

    thank you

  7. Ginny Gelbach says:

I learned to ski at Vail when I first came to CO. in 1964. I don’t remember ticket prices but they couldn’t have been too high..I was a teacher and on a limited budget. My first run…with very minimal instruction from friends…Riva Ridge was a nightmare and took forever. I persisted…here I am at 82 still putting on the boards…at Loveland…weekdays. Vail is out of my budget now.

    • Riva Ridge was a nightmare last February…so many 6 packs converging at the top that skiing down was like maneuvering through of forest of moving trees…

  8. Thanks for posting this, Evelyn! Just wanted to mention a couple of things:
    1) The charges for the Over the Hill Gang at Copper (listed above) are just for that program. You still need to buy or have a pass to ski at Copper Mountain. See this text from the OHG write-up:
“Lift tickets or Copper Mountain/Ikon season passes are required for all lesson participants and are not included with the program.”
    2) The $25 Super Senior charge for Monarch Mountain is a great deal, but if you’re skiing there just a day or two, you can instead buy a $5 RFID card and go to the ticket window at the beginning of each ski day to get the card validated.
    Thanks!

Can Seniors Skiing work with the various Ski mountains in the US for discounts for Seniors? Years a go you used to publish a list of discounted rates for seniors across the US. No more. Boomers have the most discretionary income available along with your thousands of subscribers should be a good starting point to negotiate better rates for us.

  10. Lets face it, these are rather pitiful discounts. Hardly qualify for being called discounts.

  11. Seniors 80+ ski free at Alta. Or for $100 you get a season pass so you don’t need to go to the ticket window for the day pass.
25 years ago (I was 57), I was skiing Alta on a perfect powder day (over 2 feet) and there were 20-30 skiers with “Over 80” badges shredding the powder! I still live for those powder days!

Additional entry for Discounts For Senior Skiers/Riders In Colorado
in Other News — by Evelyn Kanter

The Ski Cooper area near Leadville and historic Camp Hale ( NOT Copper Mountain adjacent to I70) offers a $10 season pass for seniors 75+ years old. The 10 Mountain Division may have trained here during WW2. The runs are mellow, the workers are friendly, and the prices are quite reasonable. For example, an all-day lift ticket for ages between 22 and 74 is $65 to $95 depending on the day of the week. Ski Cooper has 5 lifts with terrain for everyone from beginners to expert.

  13. JANET HEETER says:

I just called Copper Mountain to check on the $99 daily lift ticket for seniors. NOPE! No discount for any seniors. Full price – $144 – charged.

    • Richard Lambert says:

Sorry for the confusion. The prices in the article are for the program which does not include lift tickets. A note was added to clarify that.
