Update: Change In Gear/Clothing Discounts From Experticity

There’s Been A Big Change In How SeniorsSkiing.Com Subscribers Can Access Discounts From Experticity.

When SeniorsSkiing.com was launched, we made an arrangement with Promotive.com to offer discounts to our readers.  There was no cost involved, readers who subscribed signed up with Promotive using a code provided and enjoyed the same kind of discounts offered to professional racers, teams, coaches, instructors, etc.

Promotive merged with Experticity, another discount gateway website. Experticity promises the vendors that list their products on its site that people who have access are bona fide members of a professional group of some kind to earn the offered discounts. When Experticity looked at our list of subscribers, they had no way to tell who was a pro and who was a committed amateur without industry standing.  So, the rules of access to Experticity have changed.

If you are already signed up with Experticity, you will still have access to the site up to the anniversary date of your initial sign up.  After your anniversary date of your sign up passes, you will be asked to re-apply using the application process below.

If you are new to SeniorsSkiing.com and are signing up with Experticity for the first time, you have to follow the new application process.

The new application process requires you to enter the code provided by Experticity which you can find in our Subscriber-Only Content area under Community in the top blue menu. You will be asked to complete a questionnaire and verify your status by submitting some type of evidence.

Here’s the application form.

If you have any questions about any of this, please call Experticity at 866-376-4685 or email at member.support@experticity.com.

Mount Washington

This Week In SeniorsSkiing.Com (Sept. 1)

Long-Awaited Experticity Update, Hiking Caveats, More Ski Songs.

Our thoughts are with the people in Southeast Texas who have been displaced by Harvey.  As we remember from the monster snow winter in New England 2015-16 when we had nine feet in a matter of weeks, this kind of disruption can cause much anxiety and distraction that lasts for months.  But Don’t Mess With Texas.

This week we finally have news about the Experticity discounts on gear and clothing for our subscribers. Here’s the background.

Hiking Fatality Study

Over the summer, we noticed an important article in the Boston Globe, by Martin Finucane, about a research study on the causes of hiker fatalities in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We are presenting it here because we know that many of our readers are hikers. We were surprised by the cause of most fatalities.  Read the article here.

More Skiing Songs!

Thanks to our readers, we have even more “venerable” ski songs you can listen to.  We apparently struck a nostalgic note with our readers who took it upon themselves to send in digital copies of old tunes and referred us to other favorites. Listen to some oldies here.  This all started with our archival article on Ski Songs of The Sixties which can be accessed here.

Why You Might Have To Re-Enter Your Name And Email

We hear from annoyed (and angry) readers from time to time asking why they have to re-enter their name and email address when they access SeniorsSkiing.com even though they are already subscribed.  There is an answer to this and it has to do with browsers and cookies.  We are reminding everyone about how to avoid this admittedly annoying glitch.  Read all about it here.

On To Labor Day

Once we pass through the Labor Day barrier, we will be getting closer to snow season.  At SeniorsSkiing.com, we are brushing off our notebooks and spreadsheets after a lazy (and busy) summer and planning for the upcoming season.

Hang with us, tell your friends, let us know how we are doing and what you want to see in SeniorsSkiing.com.  Remember, there really are more of us every day and we aren’t going away.

Experticity Update: Good News, Bad News

Experticity Discount Benefit For SeniorsSkiing.com Is Changing.

For the past couple of months, we’ve been getting emails from new subscribers asking for clarity and/or instructions for accessing the Experticity site where readers can get amazing discounts on gear and clothing from top brands. These new readers were unable to get on the site.  So, we inquired, and after a decent interval, we inquired again.  And then we finally heard back from an Experticity rep.

Here’s the scoop.

Last summer, Experticity merged with Promotive, the original online discount site we worked with to set up this benefit for our readers.  When the switcheroo came, Experticity gave us a new code and a new group name (“Ski Experts”) that differed from the Promotive name and code.  No worries so far. New subscribers were able to sign up with Experticity with no problems.

Recently, the folks at Experticity have been taking a closer look at who has access to their site.  They state that the discounts offered to the “Ski Expert” category is meant for people who are athletes, instructors, coaches, industry members, and the like. In other words, industry professionals. Their vendors expect the people who buy through Experticity to have those kinds of credentials; that’s part of the value Experticity adds.  While we do have a lot of ski instructors as subscribers, most of our readers are not those kinds of professional skiers.  So they pulled the code and, for now, have blocked access to the discounts for new subscribers.

What does this mean?  We are in the process of figuring out how we can revive that important discount benefit to our subscribers.

Good news: If you have already signed up when Experticity was Promotive and have been able to access the site, you will continue to have access until you reach the anniversary date of when you signed up.  Then you have to go through a new sign-up process.

Bad news: If you are new subscriber, we ask you to be patient until we figure out how or if we can work with Experticity to re-establish access. They gave us a new code, but there is a new sign-up process which we are trying to understand.

We are on top of this situation and will let you know as soon as we know what’s going on with Experticity.

Short Swings!

A WOW Ski deal for Senior Skiers!

The day before Alta closed for the season, a few ski companies were set up to demo products. One was Liberty Skis, a Colorado ski maker specializing in bamboo. I tried the Variant 87 and now own a pair. The “87” indicates the width of the ski under the boot, considerably narrower than what I’ve skied the past few decades in Western powder and occasional crud. But after a day on Alta’s corn-covered groomers, I knew that I had to have the Variant 87. The company representative gave me his card and the web address for their pro discount. This is where the story gets interesting and relevant to SeniorsSkiing.com subscribers. The Liberty Skis site currently lists the Variant 87 for $599 (in season MSRP is $725). Liberty is one of the companies offering discounts to SeniorsSkiing readers through Experticity, the pro discount program available to all readers who have registered to receive the weekly SeniorsSkiing.com editorial package. Through Experticity, the Variant 87 is $398.75!!!! (plus tax). The lesson here: If you’re looking for bargains, get thee to Experticity. Deep discounts on more than 40 cool brands await.

CALIFORNIA

Squaw Valley has had soooo much snow, it’s considering staying open through the summer.

CHINA

A cave painting in China’s Xinjiang region (between Mongolia and Kazakhstan) shows people hunting on skis. It is thought to be more than 10,000 years old — 2,000 years older than the next earliest ski artifact on record.

UTAH

Snowbird is the only resort still open, and it’s getting hammered. Almost three feet have fallen the past few days and more is forecast.

The University of Utah dedicated a new facility to support its ski racing program. The Spence Eccles Ski Team Building has locker rooms and gear storage fror the school’s Nordic and Alpine teams, as well as tuning facilities, meeting rooms, etc. The facility is named for ski team alumni and NCAA All-American Spence Eccles.
