Heading into the New Season

Phil Johnson, Richard Lambert, and Mike Roth at Boston Snowbound Expo 2022.

From the Publisher –

What gets you most psyched up for ski season? For me there are a few things. The first snowfall of the season is always exciting, and there are few sounds I enjoy more than my car tires crunching freshly fallen snow. When my kids were growing up, going to the fall ski swap was a family ritual.

This year I eagerly await visiting the Snowbound Expo in Boston in early November.  Last year was the first show after a two-year pandemic hiatus.  I was both amazed and delighted to notice how long the line was to get in.  The passion of my fellow snow enthusiasts was palatable.

I hope your list includes your SeniorsSkiing subscription and the articles we bring to keep you informed and entertained this season.  Please don’t hesitate to share your stories and story ideas with us.  Think Snow!

How wonderful! We love the family atmosphere at Mt. Bachelor (we moved here from VA many years ago for the skiing!) and eagerly await each snowfall. I love that your entire family embraced skiing from an early age–we took our sons on many Western ski trips and, even though we had one turn to the dark side (he took up snowboarding), they are now hoping to teach their children to ski! Happy trails!

I was a long time volunteer patrolman at Timberline during the time you were an instructor there. In later years, I continued as a volunteer doc for Timberline in their first aid room. There was no better way to learn about my kids activities than riding up the chair with them and just listening in to their conversations. I later moved to Central Oregon and continued skiing with my kids and their kids at Bachelor. We also did annual treks to Sun Valley and our stays there were the highlight of the winter and now are the frequent topic of fun discussions at family gatherings.

I love the crisp mornings and the Indian Summer afternoons, helping with our local fall ski swap and getting tickets to this years Warren Miller ski film.

I have been skiing since 1968 when a special class field trip took me to Bryce Moutain, VA. I strapped on a pair of Head metal skis taller than I, and though by night I was sore and tired (I feel I was butt-first on the snow more that day than actually skiing on it) it has been a a life-long passion and enjoyment. As I approach my 70th birthday, I feel my boys (who are 15 — I started late ) keep me young and going. I taught them to ski at age 5 and now they leave me in the (snow) dust. My nearest areas in central PA are Roundtop (50 minutes, but only 15 from my sons’ school) and Whitetail.

Has anyone skied the Dolomite Ski Safari with Inspired Italy? I’m wondering how to best prepare for the endurance needed for the very long runs that they have there. They do appear to ski on Intermediate runs, I just need to be prepared to ski all day continuously with only a lunch stop.

I have skied there many times. Be prepared for many interconnected runs and areas. Do ski Sella Ronda, pretty much a full day if blue runs that return you to the starting place. A good idea to do a guided tour. It’s easy to get lost. Enjoy!

      Hi Kathy,
I’ve skied in the Val Gardena, Ortisei area many times…Yes if you want to do the Sella Ronda in one day, you’ll have to be prepared to ski all day. The runs are not very difficult and the scenery is magnificent…Have a great trip…Take into account that there’s a World Cup DH race in the 13-16 Dec. which may affect access to some of the runs. I’ve usually stayed on my favorite runs rather than do the safari.

I now have the good fortune of being part of a three generation Ski Patrol family, as my son and grandson are both Professional Ski Patrollers and I volunteer.

For an affordable place for a family ski trip my young family would head for Badger Pass in Yosemite for their mid-week ski package. The legendary Nic Fiore led the ski school where all four of us learned to ski. Not a big mountain but a beautiful, well run and fun place for a family to learn the joys of our sport.

Ah yes, I have to agree with John. I too started my skiing journey at Badger Pass in Yosemite. Such a beautiful drive getting there in the winter. Plus, tickets were only $6 at the time. Just saw the new Warren Miller movie – All Time, celebrating 74 years of wonderful ski movies. Great to see skiing grow through those 74 years…. And more to come!!!

What gets me most excited has changed over the years. With young skiing granddaughters (7 and 9 this season), It starts with planning the family ski trip and making reservations in the summer. Then it is receiving a photo each October of them with their newly rented skis and boots for the season.

When summer ends I start hiking with good boots, breathable pants & shirt, bush hat to shield the sun and flies, water, with ski poles. I hiked Gunstock and Ragged in NH, then Jay Peak VT. Jay got snow this week. I hope to step up the exercise and stretching so I can ski the blacks and stay healthy at 70. Peace, pray for snow. Enjoy your notes and the posts.
